Fundamenta Folia
Fundamenta Folia is a collection of visualizations that form a morphological classification system for plant leaves.
About 391.000 species of vascular plants are currently known to science. They are classified by their phylogenetic properties rather than their morphological properties.
The aim of this project is to create an organizing principle, a classification system, for leaves of vascular plants which focuses on these morphological characteristics.

A range of photographs were taken in Vilvoorde and Brussels to thoroughly understand and distinguish the main structures of plants.
Plant leaves were analyzed and dissected by sketching them. These sketches determine the parameters of classification: nervature, plane, texture and leaf margin.
This radial tree diagram visualizes the variety within the classification system. Four main structures, written in both Latin and English determine the morphological characteristics of the leaf: nervature, plane, texture and leaf margin.
The animation gives a brief context on the researched and visualized topic. It also shows the possible combinations within one main structure.
A website where people can freely navigate through the classification system. The home page consists of an introduction on the left side, and the main structure of the classification, an interactive tree on the right side. People can get an in depth view on the structures by clicking them in navigation bar or the infographic. The in depth view visualizes the possible combination within the structure by using GIFs. This website is made for displays with 27 inch / 2560 px width only.
The application of the classification on real leaves. Each leaf is supported by a photograph and four icons with their corresponding Latin name.
All these visualizations reveal the variation within the different structures of leaves and creates clarity within the complex beauty of nature. The visualizations are displayed on three knee-level wooden pedestals to give an overview of all the works in one sight.
